Inside My Writing, WIPjoy

WIPjoy: Day Fifteen

Day 15

I don’t really get writer’s block. Before you decide you hate me, let me explain.

I haven’t gotten writer’s block yet. Not the serious, I’m-sitting-in-front-of-a-blank-page-and-can’t-think-of-anything-to-write-but-I-want-to-write, writer’s block.

No, what I get is writer’s don’t-feel-like-it-itis. You know what I mean. You might call it writer’s block, but what you really mean is the little writer fairy didn’t come sprinkle you with any muse dust today, so you don’t feel like writing anything. Nothing is burning in your imagination to be put onto the paper or the computer screen, so you just don’t feel like it. That’s what I get.

For writer’s don’t-feel-like-it-itis, I have to make myself open the document and look at the page. I start writing anything, even if it’s about how I don’t feel like writing, until I start getting back into a flow and can work on my story. There are really few times that I’ve felt very inspired or impatient to start writing, so if I waited for that, I’d always think I had writer’s block. But the truth is, most of the time, it’s just that I don’t feel like it. That doesn’t get a book written.

The reasons I don’t always feel like it probably would make another blog entry. Maybe another time.
